Michael Jackson - Moonwalker [Non-US Format, PAL, Region 2, U.K. Import]

Michael Jackson - Moonwalker [Non-US Format, PAL, Region 2, U.K. Import] Review

I've loved Michael ever since I was seven. This movie was the first glimpse that I seen with him and he was great. It opens up with him performing "Man In the Mirror", then it shows snippets of him singing as a child. It then shows Michael's "Leave Me Alone" video. It includes a mini movie of Michael and three children; Michael and the little girl who plays Katie stumble upon a druglord, while looking for their dog Skipper, who runs into the woods after they all are shown playing in the park. The druglord (Frankie Lideo) goes on a manhunt to kill Michael, along with his army of "robotic machines". Michael gets away after running into a dead-in by wishing upon a "lucky star" and being transformed into this extremely fast, futuristic car. He goes to Club 30's and his video "Smooth Criminal" is shown. After it ends, Michael is told by the two boys that Katie was taken by Frankie, so Michael goes to rescue her. At first it seems as if Michael will be defeated, but of course, good trumps evil, so in the end Michael overcomes Frankie's army by turning into a "robotic machine" himself (much cooler version than Frankie's army) and destroys them. Michael and Frankie have a final showdown and Frankie loses (no surprise there). Michael leaves and the children are sad to see him go. Katie takes it the hardest and wishes upon a star for him to come back and Michael suddenly walks through the fogged streets. After, the reunion they walk to Club 30's where Michael closes with his version of "Come Together" (I love it). As a child, I saw him as somewhat magical, because that's exactly how he potrayed himself. He was an excellent singer and entertainer. Though, he's no longer with us he will live on through his music and his children. I love you Michael! R.I.P.

The Guru [Region 2]

The Guru [Region 2] Review

It's an amazingly funny movie. Movies like 'Deuce Bigelow' and Guru require you to set aside your common sense, your highbrow intellect and just have a good laugh. The storyline is obviously silly and many scenes may be too politically incorrect for the super-sensitive souls, but its just a movie- for laughs!

The Guru [Region 2] Overview

The Day-Glo delights of India's Bollywood musicals collide with the crossed-love conventions of Hollywood romantic comedies in The Guru. Jimi Mistry, a young Indian named Ramu who wants to live the American dream and become famous, moves to New York and finds only menial work in restaurants. But when he mistakenly gets cast in a skin flick, he meets a sweet and thoughtful porn star (Heather Graham) whose philosophical mix of sex and spirituality come in handy when Ramu has to pretend to be a swami for an upper-crust birthday party. The birthday girl (Marisa Tomei) seizes upon Ramu's cribbed aphorisms and leads Ramu into a career as a sex guru. The Guru's uneven script squanders much of its comic potential, but the stars have charm to burn--and when the movie launches into its glorious musical numbers, it enters a realm of delirious glee. --Bret Fetzer

Bugsy Malone

Bugsy Malone Review

Bugsy Malone is a movie you have to see more than once. I got hooked after the 3rd or 4th viewing. I looked for it everywhere and finally found it at Amazon.com....of course. For some reason, it isn't available from the U.S. This was sent from Asia and arrived very quickly. It plays like any DVD, but instructions, etc are not in English. I'm very hard of hearing, so closed captioning is important to me...no problem. I'm so happy to have this movie available whenever I want. I am continually amazed at the availability of rare things on Amazon. I live on the coast of Oregon, happy to be here, but no access to city shopping makes it imperative that I have a reliable and affordable online source. I'm happy to say I've found it in Amazon.

Bugsy Malone Overview

Asian release of award winning DVD directed by Alan Parker (1976) and starring Jodi Foster and Scott Baio. A child gangster determined to rule over New York City. Instead of throwing fists or bullets, the prohibition-era kiddie mobsters sling confections at one another. When he learns that a rival gang has developed a secret weapon capable of firing sweets as quick as a machine gun shoots bullets, he sets out to heist the high-tech tart-launcher. Multi winners of BAFTA Awards. Original English dialogue with English/Chinese subtitles. Digital Dolby/5.1. NTSC. Panorama Ent. 2002.

Bugsy Malone Specifications

Writer-director Alan Parker's feature debut Bugsy Malone is a pastiche of American movies, a musical gangster comedy set in 1929, featuring prohibition, showgirls, and gang warfare, with references to everything from Some Like It Hot to The Godfather. Uniquely, though, all the parts are played by children, including an excellent if underused Jodie Foster as platinum-blonde singer Tallulah, Scott Baio in the title role and a nine-year-old Dexter Fletcher wielding a baseball bat. Cream-firing "spluge guns" sidestep any real violence and the movie climaxes cheerfully with the biggest custard pie fight this side of Casino Royale (1967).

Unfortunately for a musical, Paul Williams's score--part honky-tonk jazz homage, part 1970s Elton John-style pop--lets the side down with a lack of memorable tunes. Nevertheless, Parker's direction is spot on and the look of the film is superb, a fantasy movie-movie existing in the same parallel reality as The Cotton Club and Chicago. A rare British love letter to classic American cinema, Bugsy Malone remains a true original; in Parker's words "the work of a madman" and one of the strangest yet most stylish children's films ever made. --Gary S. Dalkin

Johnny Suede

Johnny Suede Review

JOHNNY SUEDE does what indie films do best. It presents an odd, unique vision that's tough to describe or market. (A similar oddball film is THE LAST BIG THING).

The film takes place in Brooklyn, but you wouldn't know it unless you read the credits. It's not the recognizable Brooklyn of Spike Lee, or Woody Allen, or John Travolta. With the sparse sets and anachronistic pop music costumes (of Darlette, Johnny, and Freak) I wasn't even sure about the time period. Sometimes it seems to be set in a surreal alternate realm (like STREETS OF FIRE).

Johnny is a musician who plays retro rock, but his huge pompadour hair is so buffonish, one wonders if he's not meant as a caricature, a joke that no one quite gets. Then one sees Freak Storm in the same hair, and one wonders again if we're in an alternate realm in which this is a common style. (We see the same bizarre hair in TROUBLE IN MIND, and that film was indeed set in the near future.)

Like STREETS OF FIRE, JOHNNY SUEDE draws you in. You can't try and figure out this film, you just have to accept it on its own terms and enjoy the ride.

The music is excellent. I wish they'd release a soundtrack, though it seems they never have.

I disagree with a comment that said that everyone takes advantage of Johnny. I see it as largely the other way. Johnny is a parasite and sloth. (1) Deek tries to help him with getting a real job, and even lends him money. Johnny shows no gratitude. (2) Johnny turns down a music gig because it goes against his artistic sensibility to perform without a bassist, even though the other band members are ready and willing to go ahead. Then Johnny complains that it's the others who are no help. (3) Not wanting to work, Johnny comes up with the idea of robbing a barber shop. Deek does the work of getting the gun, but Johnny flakes out. (4) Yvonne is a devoted girlfriend, cooking for Johnny, baking him a birthday cake, buying him a shirt, and Johnny only cheats on her in return. (5) Johnny is behind on his rent, so he's also taking advantage of his landlord. (6) And Johnny tries to take advantage of Darlette's music business mother. Sure, she also wants to bed him. But does that let Johnny off the hook?

Ultimately, JOHNNY SUEDE is fascinating to watch, occassionally funny (especially Freak Storm), with great music. But it's also a depressive film. These people do not live great lives, and there's no bright future ahead. All they have is their youth, which allows them to dream. What will happen when they're no longer young?

Johnny is happy only because he's too dense to know better, his vision of reality obscured by his dream world. However, there's a hint of hope at the end, in that he apologizes to Yvonne and loses his shoe (the latter perhaps symbolizing his budding maturity).

I've seen this film several times. Well worth a look for fans of oddball indie films.

Johnny Suede Overview

Johnny Suede is a young man with an attitude and an immense pompadour, who wants to be a rock n' roll star like his idol Ricky Nelson. He has all the stylistic accoutermentsexcept a pair of black suede shoes. One night, after leaving a nightclub a pair of black suede shoes falls at his feet. Soon afterwards, Johnny meets Darlette. In spite of Darlette's abusive boyfriend with a gun, Johnny begins to see Darlette everyday. When Johnny is forced to pawn his guitar for rent money, Darlette mysteriously leaves him. Depressed about Darlette's desertion, he wanders aimlessly, and he meets Yvonne, a woman much wiser than Johnny who teaches him that there are things in life much more important than a pair of black suede shoes.

Living with Michael Jackson Part 3 of 10

Living with Michael Jackson is a documentary, in which British journalist Martin Bashir interviewed Michael Jackson over a span of 8 months, from May 2002 to January 2003. It was shown first in the UK on 3 February 2003 and in the US three days later on ABC, introduced by Barbara Walters. Martin Bashir put the proposal to Jackson as a way to show the world the truth about him and make nothing off limits. Jacksons decision to make the documentary was made on the suggestion by his close friend Uri Geller. It later emerged that Geller had turned down another bid for the interview by journalist Louis Theroux. The interview was very unusual, as it had been extremely rare for Jackson to allow such access to his personal life, or to talk so freely about his traumatic childhood. Nevertheless, he did show some reserve when asked to discuss other personal issues, such as the plastic surgery he has had. Jackson felt betrayed by Bashir and complained that the film gives a distorted picture of his behaviour and conduct as a father. He claims that Bashir, in the final version of his interview, used only that material which supported Bashirs opinion of Jackson, which was not a favorable one. Jackson filed complaints with the uks Independent Television Commission and the Broadcasting Standards Commission. Jacksons lawyers claimed in a British High Court case against Martin Bashir and Granada TV that the documentary was a breach of contract and breach of confidence. The proceedings were ...

Cheatin Hearts

Cheatin Hearts Review

James Brolin, Kris Kristofferson & Sally Kirkland give performances of their lifetimes in this wonderfully bittersweet tale of love. Ms. Kirkland portrays the unwanted wife, struggling to come to terms with the facts of her lost love, with beauty and with grace. This is her finest performance since her oscar nominated role as "Anna" in the film of the same name. There is one climactic scene with Ms. Kirkland and Mr. Brolin in the rain which will tear your heart out. Mr. Brolin does a terrific turn as the husband gone wrong, who turns up with a new, much younger girlfriend. And Mr. Kristofferson, always a great actor, never lets us down with his performance. Also, quite notably are the younger actors, most especially, Pamela Giddley. This film is a breathtaker in its cinematography and music, as well, which lend beauty and resonance to this heartfelt story. A must see!!!

Cheatin Hearts Overview

He's one of a breed that made history a hundred years ago. When such a man takes what he wants, without regard for anyone or anything, he must eventually face the music, and Henry, (James Brolin) is no exception. After walking out on his wife Jenny, (Sally Kirkland) and two daughters over a year ago, his abrupt return can only mean a bittersweet reunion on his youngest daughter's wedding day. Complicating matters is Tom, (Kris Kristofferson) a renegade and old friend of Jenny's who always seems to be there for her when the trail gets too rough. The fireworks that light up this small town ignite with the discovery of Henry's new girlfriend and by the mysterious presence of Tom. When they all meet, the spirit of the Wild West comes to life. As the dust settles, who will remain to finish the tale?

VH1 Storytellers Classics

VH1 Storytellers Classics Review

VH1 Storytellers Classics Overview

Recommended more for quality of live performance than for storytelling, VH1 Storytellers: Classics is a seven-song compilation from the popular VH1 series, bearing all the strengths and weaknesses inherent in the program. Some of the featured musicians are fine raconteurs, and the format of the show encourages them to share the genesis of their best-known songs. Pete Townshend explains that the title of "Baba O'Riley" was a combination of two people who inspired him when he wrote the song: Indian spiritual teacher Meher Baba and electronic musician Terry Riley (he added the "O'" for a touch of Irish flavor). David Bowie explains how "China Girl" arose from a collaboration with Iggy Pop after a moving experience in a Berlin punk club; and before launching into an outstanding performance, Steely Dan's Donald Fagen describes "Kid Charlemagne" as an allusion to the passing of the 1960s.

Other performers have little or nothing to say about the songs they perform (when asked, Rod Stewart shamefully can't recall who originally played mandolin on "Maggie May"), but virtually all of these performances are first-rate and fully deserving of their inclusion. Surprisingly--or perhaps not--Ringo Starr provides the highlight, recalling how his melancholy feeling of exclusion during the recording of the Beatles' White Album led him to take a holiday in Sardinia. It was there that he was inspired to write "Octopus's Garden," and his performance of that song--with his hand-picked band the All- Stars--is as purely delightful as the original recording. --Jeff Shannon

[HQ] USA for Afrika - We are the World (Original 1985) | Michael Jackson Stevie Wonder...

www.usaforafrica.org RIP Ray Charles & Michael Jackson USA for Africa (United Support of Artists for Africa) was the name under which forty-seven predominantly US artists, led by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, recorded the hit single "We Are the World" in 1985. The song was a US and UK Number One for the collective in April of that year. This super group was inspired by Bob Geldof's Band Aid. The considerable profits from the enterprise went to the USA for Africa Foundation, which used them for the relief of famine and disease in Africa and specifically to 19841985 famine in Ethiopia; critics, however, claim that this money went directly to the (often military) governments of the affected countries rather than the people. USA for Africa also held a benefit event, Hands Across America, in which approximately seven million people held hands in a human chain for fifteen minutes along a path across the continental United States. Participants paid ten dollars to stand in line and the money raised was used to fight hunger and homelessness in Africa. The combined revenues raised from the sales of "We Are the World" and Hands Across America was almost $100 million. Chronological order of presentation * Lionel Richie (There comes a time, When we heed a certain call) * Lionel Richie & Stevie Wonder (when the world must come together as one) * Stevie Wonder (there are people dying) * Paul Simon (oh, and its time to lend a hand) * Paul Simon & Kenny Rogers (to life, the greatest ...

Michael Jackson: The Life And Times Of The King Of Pop 1958 - 2009

Michael Jackson: The Life And Times Of The King Of Pop 1958 - 2009 Review

this is a fantastic personal-feeling experience about the death and funeral of mj and some of the memorial service as well. it is personal-feeling because some of it is home-made videos and i love that - it makes it so real. from the time where the ambulance started coming to mj's house to the moments of the memorial service seeing how much everyone loves him, this dvd had a serious and personal feel to it.

there is one point in the memorial service when mj's brother jermaine is talking and the dvd freezes, but all i had to do was push the instant skip button on my controller and it went right on playing (this is the only reason i gave this dvd a 4 star and not a 5 star). the appearances in the service are - usher, janet jackson, jermaine jackson, the jacksons, berry gordy, brooke shields, magic johnson, rev. al sharpton, stevie wonder and lionel richie.

definitely recommend to mj fans out there. "michael is irreplaceable" as this dvd says on the back cover SO WELL.

Michael Jackson: The Life And Times Of The King Of Pop 1958 - 2009 Overview

Fans Camera Footage, By Fans For Fans Review

To the guy that talked about "occult practices" on this DVD without even having watched it, that seems a little foolish, especially now that it seems you simply misunderstood the blurb on the back! It says there is a "transcript", not a video of it! It seems a bit silly to rate down something you haven't even seen and to not even review the source material.

Anyway, who are you to say what Michael would or would not have approved of? He may have been brought up a Jehovah's Witness but he wasn't really one by the end of his life; he was much more open minded than that.

The Glory Boys

The Glory Boys Review

This is a gripping thriller with a background that feels authentic. A Palestinian teams up with a member of the Provisional IRA for the assassination of an Israeli scientist (Rod Steiger). A British special forces man (Anthony Perkins) is activated to prevent that. I think all the important characters are very well sketched - down to the young girl who falls in love with the IRA man - and I don't find fault with the cast. The ending is unforgettable.

The Glory Boys Feature

  • This explosive three-part thriller from novelist Gerald Seymour stars Rod Steiger, Anthony Perkins and Joanna Lumley. Palestinian radicals have a plan to gun down top Israeli nuclear scientist David Sokarev (Steiger), who is on an official visit to London. Pennies from Heaven [Region 2]

Pennies from Heaven [Region 2] Review

A long time ago, television stations would take great chances and produce TV that was intelligent, thought provoking, and profound. This is one of those examples. Dennis Potter's Pennies from Heaven is one of the greatest TV miniseries ever made. While not as good as The Singing Detective (which is Potter's masterpiece), this is still magnificent and worth investing all 7 hours or so. This is far superior to the film version. The film isn't terrible, but taking a 7 hour miniseries and condensing into a 108 minute is a big mistake. The characters' motivation in the film version is questionable, because they've taken out big chunks of story. But we're here to review the miniseries, not the misguided film version.

The performances here are absolutely first rate, from Hoskins and Campbell, to Kenneth Colley as The Accordion Man, to Freddie Jones as a headmaster, and Hywel Bennett as a deeply cynical, cruel man who uses Campbell. The miniseries has a rather disturbing tone to it for many reasons. The songs that Potter uses are the cheery songs of the depression, which were in major contrast to what was really happening. The songs are at first quite jarrring, but soon you get used to it, and realise it's a great narrative device. Hoskins plays a sexual obsessive man who feels neglected at home, and the language is rather frank for its time. The miniseries features an abortion, prostitution, murder, and just plain old fashioned cruelty of life. One of the most memorable scenes is the farewell that Freddie Jones gives to Cheryl Campbell in the film. Campbell teaches at a rural school, and she becomes pregnant by Hoskins. Jones learns of this, but instead of doing a Puritannical thing on her, he is quite moving in his speech to her, realising that he cannot have her teaching at the school, despite the fact that he knows she's really a beautiful woman and a gentle soul who just made a stupid mistake. The miniseries takes the viewer on quite a journey, and it's really one of the most unique experiences in TV ever made. Potter was as much an auteur as any director, and he was one of the greatest teleplay writers the U.K. ever produced. This and The Singing Detective are his legacy, and it's a great one.

Pennies from Heaven [Region 2] Overview

Dennis Potter's astonishing six-part miniseries remains one of the edgiest, most audacious things ever conceived for television. The story tells of one Arthur Parker (Bob Hoskins), a sheet-music salesman in 1930s England. Beaten down by economic hard times and the sexual indifference of his proper wife (Gemma Craven), Arthur cannot understand why his life can't be like the beautiful songs he loves. On a sales trip through the Forest of Dean, he meets a virginal rural woman (Cheryl Campbell) he suspects may be his ideal. Ruination follows. Punctuating virtually every scene is a vintage pop song--lip-synched and sometimes danced out by the characters. This startling innovation makes the contrast between Arthur's brutish life and his bourgeois dreams even more dramatic.

Potter's dark vision digs into British stoicism, sexual repression, the class system, and even the coming of fascism in Europe. But it is especially poignant on the subject of the divide between art and reality. Piers Haggard directs the long piece with deft transitions between songs and story. (It was shot partly on multi-camera video, partly on film.) The cast is fine, especially the extraordinary Cheryl Campbell, who imbues her character with keen intelligence and no small measure of perversity. Bob Hoskins triumphs in his star-making part, bringing a demonic energy to his small-time Cockney, nearly bursting his button-down vests with frustration and appetite. Pennies from Heaven was remade in 1981 for the big screen (with Steve Martin), an interesting, Potter-scripted adaptation; it's one of the reasons the original has been unavailable on home video for so long. --Robert Horton

Peter Jackson's Bad Taste

Peter Jackson's Bad Taste Review

It seems strange that a New Zealand town has been invaded by hungry alien intruders and some of the poulation has been disappearing like rabbits. They disguise themselves as regular humans to not look suspicious but the New Zealand government hires a team of exterminators such as Ozzy (Terry Potter), Barry (Peter O'Herne), Frank (Mike Minette) and Derek (Peter Jackson) to investigate. They discover the aliens's plan on using human flesh for the latest in their intergalactic fast-food chain business but can the bumbling team save the human race or will they end up as lunch?

Sick, twisted and hilarious Science Fiction horror action comedy from writer and director Peter Jackson made one hell of a debut here. Before he did "Lord of the Rings", "King Kong", "Dead Alive", "Meet The Feebles" and "Heavenly Creatures" he made this New Zealand production which was became an independent sensation in that country to now in the US thanks to video, midnight theater showings and DVD. What works here is that the humor is absolutely morbid from aliens drinking vomit to the hilarious exploding sheep sequence and the storyline is very good as well. Yes the acting is bad but what can you expect from a b-movie? it has that feel of Troma and Herschell Gordon Lewis combined here and some crowdpleasing gore scenes such as headings exploding, brains splattering, cannibalism, dimsemberment and everything but the kitchen sink. This film is not for the squeamish or everyone but for those with a taste of dark comedy with Sci-fi and horror thrown in it, i recommend this.

This 2-Disc Limited Edition DVD contains beautiful picture and sound in a great THX-remastered widescreen edition with only three extras such as a 25 minute featurette, trailer and bio.

Also recommended: "Dead Alive (a.k.a. Braindead)", "Critters 1 & 2", "Grindhouse", "Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956 and 1978)", "From Dusk Till Dawn", "Black Sheep (2006)", "Evil Dead 1 & 2", "Re-Animator", "The Toxic Avenger", "Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead", "Tromeo and Juliet", "Cannibal Ferox", "The Deadly Spawn (a.k.a. Return of the Aliens)", "Contamination", "Day of the Dead (1985)", "Dawn of the Dead (1978 and 2004)", "Hot Fuzz", "Shaun of the Dead", "Bride of Re-Animator", "Killer Klowns from Outer Space", "War of the Worlds (1953 and 2005)", "Aliens", "Predator", "The Blob (1988)", "The Thing (1982)", "Riki-Oh The Story of Ricky", "Terror Firmer", "Severence", "The Curse (1987)" and "Versus".

Peter Jackson's Bad Taste Overview

Could a title be any more direct? New Zealand maverick Peter Jackson made a splash (well, more of a splatter) with this film debut, a slapstick gross-out comedy about an alien fast-food franchise that turns a small town into a cheap source of meat. All that stands in the extraterrestrials' way is the Alien Investigation Defense Service (yes, it's a tasteless gag), a bunch of would-be Rambos who take on the aliens with axes, rocket launchers, and chainsaws. Jackson mines vomit jokes, dismembered corpses, and brain-spattering gore for over-the-top laughs and succeeds with inventive low-budget effects, crack timing, and sheer exuberance. Not bad for a film made on weekends with homemade props and a bunch of energetic mates. Jackson topped himself a few years later with the even more outrageous and hilarious bloody gut-buster Dead Alive.

The limited-edition two-disc set also includes the documentary featurette "Good Taste Made Bad Taste," a revealing "making of" shot at the time of production and featuring behind-the-scenes footage of Jackson's home-made special effects, and a 16-page booklet with cast interviews. --Sean Axmaker

U2 - Rattle & Hum [HD DVD]

U2 - Rattle & Hum [HD DVD] Review

I ignored Rattle and Hum when it was initially released. I liked U2 well enough but just didn't think I'd be interested in a concert film. Fast forward through time and many albums. All that Cant' Be Left Behind caught hold of me in particular the song Beautiful Day. I started delving into more of their art. Rattle and Hum was a free selection for purchasing an HD DVD drive for my Xbox 360. I was deeply moved by the way the band was captured in this film, how their songs were framed, their wonderful musical journey and overall how compelling each performance was. I recommend that you rent it. Watch it. Buy it and watch it over and over. You won't be dissappointed.

U2 - Rattle & Hum [HD DVD] Overview

Rattle and Hum is not a film for anyone looking for an introduction to Irish band U2's career in the 1980s, but it is a vibrant portrait of an established group making its musical pilgrimage through the America it has always imagined through blues, gospel, and early rock 'n' roll. Filmmaker Phil Joanou (Heaven's Prisoners), a veteran music-video director and maker of the distractingly kinetic Three O'Clock High, finds a suitable outlet for his high energy in this juggernaut of a journey, which finds U2 collaborating with a black gospel choir and B.B. King, recording inside the legendary Sun Records studio, dropping by Graceland, and in a moment of fearlessness, performing the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" to exorcise Charles Manson's sick claim on the song. --Tom Keogh

8 Mile [Blu-ray]

8 Mile [Blu-ray] Review

Well as much as I enjoyed his cds before the movie I didn't really think much of the movie. I was there the first day with a bunch of friends thinking "Hey this movie is gonna be terrible" the trailers were decent but it made it seem eminem was just going off this poor white boy story.

However the story shows growing up poor, the rap game underground, battling, love, betrayal, and hell it was even funny. Everyone came through with acting, even eminem, which really surprised me. It wasn't a Oscar awarding performance but it was good enough that he didn't hurt the film, he played his character well even though he stated he only lived in trailer park for two days in his life in the movie he played a kid who's lived there years.

Overall with the final battle being great for rap fans it's an enjoyable movie for all looking for a good kickback rap in the 90's type of film with a decent story following.

Janet Jackson - The Velvet Rope Tour (Live in Concert) (DTS)

Janet Jackson - The Velvet Rope Tour (Live in Concert) (DTS) Review

I remember being 11 years old and seeing this concert when it first aired on HBO. I wasn't exactly a huge Janet fan at the time since I was too young to really get into her, but I was immediately captivated by the colorful sets, Janet and her dancers' tight moves, and the smooth flow of the show. Janet starts from the beginning by inviting us inside her velvet rope (great concept) and revealing her sensual side with classics like If and That's the Way Love Goes, her vulnerable side with Again, Every Time, and Special, her playfulness on Go Deep and Escapade, and shares her views on societal issues on Rhythm Nation and the aggressive anti-domestic violence of What About. The I Get Lonely performance as well as Rope Burn's striptease are highlights. You go through so many emotions by the end, but feel happy and carefree by the time Together Again closes the show. All the classics are performed as well as some of the best songs on The Velvet Rope. It's a theraputic rollercoaster that's entertaining from start to finish.

"The Velvet Rope" sees a natural synergy of Janet's distinctive vocals and sweet melodies with harder edged dance rhythms, state-of-theart sounds which appeal to a multitude of musical tastes. Janet brings us her inimitable soul, funk, and dance synergy once again in a world tour set to out-gun the past triumphs of "Rhythm Nation" 1990 and "Janet" 1994.

A spectacular production of lights, dance, energy - and of course at the core - Janet's total control of the stage. "There"s a velvet rope we have inside us, keeping others from knowing our feelings. In "The Velvet Rope" I'm trying to expose and explore those feelings. I'm inviting you inside my velvet rope".

Janet Jackson - The Velvet Rope Tour (Live in Concert) (DTS) Specifications

This lavish two-hour concert special, originally produced for HBO, offers ample proof of Janet Jackson's fierce ambitions. Whitney, Celine, and Mariah can run circles around her small, sweet voice, but Janet brings a tough, muscular power to her live performances that none of those peers can approach, storming through myriad set and costume changes, and sustaining an aerobic pace through elaborate dance routines. As captured during this Madison Square Garden presentation of her Velvet Rope tour, Janet Jackson is, ahem, very buff indeed, not just in her well-toned physical health, but in her vocal attack.

The Velvet Rope tosses up rappers, hard-rock heroism, melting romantic pop, and Jackson's own flavor of soft-core erotica, but the show transcends those components in its broad sense of spectacle. The star fronts a formidable battalion of dancers, singers, and musicians to make her points, and while it's obvious that the musical performances have been nipped, tucked, and polished to an acceptable sheen, Janet earns her props through sheer willpower.

Ranging across Jackson's best-known songs from the last decade, the production is noteworthy for its intricate choreography and massive settings, in which the star seeks to match the big-budget sweep of her music videos. The live troupe is formidable, composed of a crack band and a large cast of nimble dancers, and Janet keeps pace with her aerobic presence. We'll leave it to social scientists to ponder the significance of the "Rope Burn" sequence, in which an ecstatic male fan is lashed to a chair and gets to watch his favorite sex object pole-dance. If this stalwart is any indication, Janet has already won the hearts (and more) of her faithful. --Sam Sutherland

Black Snake Moan [Blu-ray]

Black Snake Moan [Blu-ray] Review

Neither of us had heard of this movie when it came out but we saw a preview for it on another movie. Given the way it was presented in the preview, I was expecting a cross between the comedic 'Snakes on a Plane' and some kind of titillating s&m thing; I mean Christina in bondage with tight shirt and panties? Yowza. Needless to say, my wife was not at all looking forward to seeing this one.

This movie is nothing like that. First off, Christina is anything but appealing in this movie. She is greasy, beat-up, unwashed, and pathologically promiscuous. You can almost see the stank lines radiating off her. Second, there is nothing sexy about the movie. The sex scene are just plain disturbing and very uncomfortable. As far as comedy goes, there is very little.

What the movie is though, is an emotionally engaging, interesting story acted supremely by everyone involved, with the exception of Justin Timberlake. I mean for a singer, he does a good job; but he is acting with some of the elite talent in the world here so he is very much out of place. The director keeps his bits to a minimum though, so it is not like he ruins the movie or anything.

My wife and I found the characters to be very believable, and we developed feeling and empathy for them. We found the story to be believable and engaging with the ring of truth about it. Which is not surprising, for the director had taken elements from his own life and put them into the characters. Also the ending was really good, it wasn't your typical 'and they lived happily ever after' romcom bs.

In short, this is one of those rare movies that had me caring about the characters and feeling for them, and not feeling let down by the ending.

Black Snake Moan [Blu-ray] Overview

Genre: Drama
Rating: R
Release Date: 21-JUL-2009
Media Type: Blu-Ray

Black Snake Moan [Blu-ray] Specifications

The lurid scenario--a nymphomaniacal white trash nymphet (Christina Ricci) is held prisoner by a bitter bluesman (Samuel L. Jackson)--gives way to an affecting tale of redemption in Black Snake Moan, writer/director Craig Brewer's follow-up to the acclaimed Hustle & Flow. Lazarus (Jackson, Jungle Fever, Pulp Fiction) finds Rae (Ricci, Monster, The Ice Storm) beaten unconscious on the road in front of his backwoods house. After bringing her inside, he learns of her wanton ways and decides to exorcise his own demons by curing Rae of her sexual compulsion. Black Snake Moan could have been terrible, but Brewer takes his story seriously enough to dig into the genuine emotions of such a situation (though along the way he certainly flirts with sexploitation overtones--several scenes look like they were plucked straight out of a hitherto unknown 1970s trash classic). Ricci, Jackson, and the supporting cast (including pop star Justin Timberlake, giving a surprisingly good performance as Rae's boyfriend) treat the characters with respect, honesty, and humor. The result is off-kilter and maybe a little too fond of its sleazy cinematic forbears to truly hit the emotional notes it's after, but Black Snake Moan has considerably more substance than its marketing would suggest. --Bret Fetzer
