UHF Review

Yes, this movie is probably one of the worse movies ever made. So what? Why are so many of the 1 star reviewers so bitter about it? This movie, IMO, is very funny (albeit, stupidly funny).

If you don't like "Weird Al" type humor, you'll probably hate this movie. If you do like that type of humor, you'll probably love it, though you'll totally understand why so many people think it sucks.

The characters are kind of lame, with the exception of Raul Hernandez (lol). There really isn't much more to say about it. If I were a critic, I would give this movie the lowest possible rating. But since I'm not a critic and I enjoy watching this every so often with my kids, I'm giving it 4 stars (giving it 5 stars would be unfair to my other 5 star reviews).

This DVD made me so sad that Michael Jackson died. What I noticed most about "THIS IS IT" is how thin and frail he looked. He pushed himself, obviously, but you could see he was struggling to offer the same amount of energy the much younger dancers had. In some dance sequences he barely dances (moves his arms and legs kind of half-heartedly, like afraid to do too much); sometimes he was robotic; and throughout he never sings, just lip syncs though all the songs. It's almost painful to watch, knowing that he was tricked into doing 50 shows when he was not up to it. He wasn't performing because he loved it and missed it, but because he had enormous debts. This was not a happy man, and now the company is trying to recoup their ticket losses by selling "what might have been". Well, judging by this video, what "might have been" might have been worse - suppose MJ had collapsed on stage during one the performances and died? He tries so hard in this video I can believe it happening - he didn't want to disappoint the fans. The other sad thing is the interviews with other dancers, all of whom are soooo enthusatic and excited about working with MJ. Sadly, they all lost their jobs when MJ died. After all those months of training, that was awful. That was hard to watch too. It was too sad. But as films go, this concert film feels raw and thrown together - it's the sight of seeing MJ in his final performance that is the focus. Years later, when the grief has subsided, I'm sure others will see this as a rushed concert film, not particularly well-made or well-edited.

I purchased this DVD only a couple of weeks before Michael Jackson's untimely death and I'm so glad I did. I was sitting here discussing some of the movies we never see anymore and this one came up. I immediately went to my computer and purchased it for less than at Amazon.com and it arrived much sooner than I expected. I now consider it a collectible. I will forever cherish it.

The Wiz [Region 2] Overview

Directed by Sidney Lumet (Serpico) and penned by Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin), this lavish 1978 adaptation of the Broadway hit The Wiz was the biggest production filmed in New York City up to that point, utilizing the newly revamped Astoria Studios and locations around the city. Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, and Ted Ross (reprising his Tony-winning role as the Lion) star in this Academy Award-nominated musical for the whole family.

The Wiz is probably the grandest take on L. Frank Baum's classic tale The Wizard of Oz. The production team created sets with a sense of urban magic and spectacle: a New York subway station literally comes to life, and the massive plaza between the World Trade Center towers is transformed into the Emerald City, featuring nearly 400 dancers with three costume changes. Like all good musicals, the Quincy Jones arrangements are highly hummable long after viewing (especially the funky "Ease On Down the Road" and the inspirational "Brand New Day"). In an era before MTV, the camera stays nearly stationary as Ross and Lena Horne vocally soar through their numbers. Their stage-like performances successfully make the leap to film, making The Wiz a testament to their singing talents and star presence. The then-thirtysomething Ross raised some eyebrows playing the traditionally teenaged Dorothy, but she and her supporting cast (including Richard Pryor as the Wiz) carry the tunes with an infectious verve that will appeal to folks of all ages. --Shannon Gee

Brassed Off [Region 2] Review

I've seen this movie twice now on satellite, and haven't tired of it. There's a lot to like. After a heavy dose of Transporter 1 through 25, Fast and Furious, various Star Treks, Star Wars, and gritty spy killing spy flicks, this is a wonderful little dose of reality - gee, I actually can sit through a thoughtful film without car chases, heroes without superpowers, and no one dangling from a helicopter getting shot at by a chain gun. Sounds un-American. That being said, this is a nicely acted, sensibly filmed story with a happy ending sandwiched in an unhappy circumstance. The actors even look like real people, even the lovely Tara Fitzgerald (every town has at least one beauty, right?) It gives the viewer a sense that amidst chaos, something lovely can still be born. The music is great. It makes me wonder why American brass bands can't do what brass bands do best - give you some real toe tapping tunes. The local university has a pretty good band, but what do we hear at half-time? We Will, We Will Rock You. C'mon! Surprise us! Turn our heads! The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is one of the best. They first came to my notice in a Disney film about pit ponys. It was another bittersweet tale about coal mining in the north of Britain when pony's pulled the carts and never saw the light of day, doing their jobs and trudging the tracks back to their subterranean mangers for a bit of sweet hay from a world they'd never see or taste again. Grimethorpe did the track for that one too, and it made me stay to the end of the credits to see who played that great music. A big thumbs up to the Brits for still creating films that make us think and feel without gut-churning special effects, and reminding us that you don't need an electric guitar to make great music, and the world is populated with people like you and I, people who pack trombones and trumpets, not machineguns and grenades.

Brassed Off [Region 2] Overview

Take The Full Monty, add a sharper emotional edge, and replace the strutting strippers with a dignified British band. That's the essence of Brassed Off, a bittersweet gem released in 1996, a year before its more popular (and Oscar-nominated) counterpart. In the Yorkshire town of Grimley, there has always been a coal mine, just as for the last 111 years there has been a brass band, and it seems that Danny (the wondrous Pete Postlethwaite) has been the director for every one of those years. Tory economic policies, however, are closing coal mines around the country in favor of nuclear power, and Grimley appears to be next on the list. Danny is unfazed by the threat, claiming, "It's music that matters." But some of the men are about to quit the band until the appearance of Gloria (Tara Fitzgerald at her most radiant), who dazzles the all-male group (including old flame Andy, played by Ewan McGregor) first with her beauty, then with her flügelhorn playing. The new member gives the band a boost as they continue to perform and compete, but closure remains very real, as director Mark Herman (Little Voice) accompanies the band's performances (played with gusto by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band) with scenes of angry labor-management confrontations and family strife. In this context, some of the characters claim that the music is an irresponsible form of escapism. It becomes clear, however, from a touching performance of "Danny Boy" to the stirring conclusion at Royal Albert Hall, that music is an expression of the human spirit, a bit of beauty and sanity in a harsh world. With defiance, the band can play "Land of Hope and Glory," even when the land offers them neither. --David Horiuchi

I have done a fair number of musical reviews in this space from old country blues tunes to Cole Porter to Billy Holiday to Bob Dylan and so on. All either reflected my personal interests or represented a segment of, mainly, American cultural expression that I thought was important to take note of. Some groups and individuals like the Beatles, most, but not all, hip-hop, Joan Baez and others have gotten short shrift in this space not because they are not important components of the modern cultural scene but out of sheer personal preference. The late performer, Michael Jackson, with or without the Five, fit very comfortably in that niche for me. No longer though after viewing the film documentary, although performance is a better term, ""This Is It", based on rehearsals for what was to be Michael Jackson's last world tour.

I am not sure, and in any case it is not important to this review, whether the film footage here would have seen the light of day if Michael Jackson had not died in 2009. The core of the film is a series of rehearsals that Jackson and his cast of singers, dancers, and musicians went through in preparation for a "This Is It" last Jackson world tour that was planned to begin just after his untimely death. The concept, according to Jackson, was to give his fans one last extravagant chance to hear and see him perform his greatest hits.

Now these kinds of world tours, last ones or not, are all in a day's work in the entertainment business. As are behind-the scenes "reality" looks at how certain cultural events are put to together. What make this film extraordinary are the fire, the imagination, and the sheer stage presence that Michael Jackson brought to the whole enterprise.

Did you read that right? This reviewer, who has spend the last forty or some years happily ignoring Michael Jackson, his music, his dancing, his off-stage antics, and his legal difficulties was totally transfixed, totally riveted by Jackson's work here. In rehearsal, of all places. Christ, as the headline indicates, he is probably one of few men who have ever lived who did not turn into a cartoonish character while wearing orange pants during some of his numbers. Although this film also demonstrates the very deferential way in which those who worked with him treated him, which may be a key to some of his off-stage problems going back to his childhood days, and I am positive I would not want to work with him this man, as singer, dancer and stage personality comes through. This kind of personality does not pass through this earth all that often. Watch what you missed. Watch what I missed.

It's hard not to watch This Is It without feeling a mixture of sorrow and elation. When he passed away in the summer of 2009, Michael Jackson was in the midst of rehearsals for his final tour, an ambitious 50-date engagement. In editing 120 hours of rehearsal footage together, Jackson producer Kenny Ortega proves that it would've been an event for the ages. Michael performs material that spans his career, from a Motown medley to multi-platinum hits from Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. Though he hadn't toured in 10 years, it becomes instantly apparent, despite rumors to the contrary, that Jackson was still in full possession of that unmistakable voice--high-pitched whoops and all--and that he still had the gravity-defying moves of a man half his age. Jackson and Ortega also collaborated on some real showstoppers, such as a graveyard-set "Thriller"; an imposing "They Don't Care About Us," in which several dancers appear to morph into thousands; and a film noir sequence in which the singer slides in and out of Gilda and other black-and-white classics, singing "Smooth Criminal" all the while. My 23 year old son and I watched it and he kept saying how he remembered watching this when he was about 6. Don't be afraid to buy this, it's Moonwalker just like you remember.

Additionally, there is English subtitles. Nice concert DVD for S&G fans inspite of Garfunkel looking a bit uncomfortable during the concert.

American Experience - Jesse James Review

Having caught this on PBS, I was immediately motivated to purchase the DVD to include in my historical library. I have seen a longer documentary effort last year: "Jesse James; Outlaw-Legend-Terrorist", but found it too dependant upon sensationalism to get it`s point across.

Here, American Experience does it`s usual quality effort; Historians comment as Period Photos and Newspaper Headlines illustrate a concise, yet insightful sketch of one of the most famed--and fictionalized-- figures in American history.

Jesse James was a product of His Time, with the flawed attitudes and perspectives of his Generation armed to the teeth and given license to rampage and kill during the Civil War. That he continued and made personal his war with society AFTER the war ended is what has made an heroic legend out of a thief and murderer. The point is amply made that The James Gang were NOT a band of Robin Hoods, but a band of hoods out robbin`. The heroic mythos that sprang up was a pure invention rather than reflective of any real intention on the outlaw`s part.

Much has been written, filmed, and theorized about Jesse James.
Much of it flawed and false.

Where this documentary succeeds whilst others fail is in presenting the facts and also addressing James` monumental egotism and his inability to STOP being "Jesse James" even as the metaphorical rope was closing about his throat.

With the recent release of the film "The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford" ; I would recommend this documentary for anyone wanting a solid documentary as a research tie-in. This would have made an excellent 'extra' for that film. The focus on James` dark psyche is an aspect all-too-often overlooked by those who seek to either lionize the man or villify him.

Jesse James seems to be either A Hero or A Villain to most, and the facts here cover both bases.

No one as complex as James can be dispensed with a simple one-word summation.

So, whether your interest in Jesse James is one of Historical Biography or Psychological examination; you will find much to appreciate here.

The Bold Outlaw and The Curse Of Idolatry are well illustrated.

Recommended for any true MJ fan. I wasn't that impressed with the actor chosen to portray MJ, but he did a fairly good job. Some parts were obviously dramatized for effect and didn't rely on "fact", but it was still worth purchasing and watching.

Flex Alexander's affecting performance in the lead role lifts Man in the Mirror, an account of the troubled, turbulent adult life of Michael Jackson. And a grim, melodramatic, and sometimes way over-the-top tale it is, as the film chronicles the litany of catastrophes visited on Jackson since Thriller turned him into the self-proclaimed King of Pop. It's all here: the Jehovah's Witnesses' horrified reaction to the supposedly blasphemous "Thriller" video (a disclaimer was added at their behest); the filming of the Pepsi commercial during which Jackson's hair caught on fire; the constant hectoring and bullying by his father, Joseph Jackson, and his subsequent alienation from his family; his many cosmetic surgeries; the debacle that was his marriage to Lisa Marie Presley; the controversial incident when he dangled his newborn son from his Berlin hotel room window; and, of course, the ongoing allegations of child molestation (to their credit, the filmmakers are fairly circumspect about the latter, neither condemning nor exonerating him). Through it all, Alexander plays Jackson as a true innocent, guileless and easily manipulated, wondering how the world can be so wicked ("What's wrong with love?" is a frequent refrain), and yet essentially kind, likable, and devoted to his fans. Alexander has Jackson's voice down, as well as some of his dance moves, and if Man in the Mirror contains no actual Jackson songs or realistic performance footage, well, that's life in the low-budget world of made-for-TV movies (it originally aired in 2004 on VH-1). Man in the Mirror hardly qualifies as great art, but in the end, it's nothing more, or less, than diverting, voyeuristic good fun. --Sam Graham

my favorite part was seeing mj at his store signing at virgin records for his invincible album - the reporter was constantly interviewing fans and asking them how they felt after just meeting mj for the first time - most of them had spent the night outside the night before to go in and meet him the next day - some of them did dance moves, some of them were crying and some were speechless. mj gave out handshakes and hugs and signatures. there was a child dressed up as mj in a shiny top and sunglasses who had a glove on, too -mj got pictures with him and picked him up to stand him on the table next to him - that was really cool. i really wish i could have met him myself - i would have definitely been one of the people asking for a hug! he seems like he had such a cool sense of humor and was so gentle.

i also liked when he was answering the questions of some of the fans in by the computers.

all of it was really good - there was a christmas speech made and also a statement about the allegations made by mj. that was very good.

i recommend this dvd - but i'm glad i got it in my mega-box set since it was cheaper that way.

It is so bittersweet to watch him. This live performance is magic. Totally worth having. Its ageless. Michael Jackson's talent is definitely ageless as well.

I almost forgot about this Robert Townsend-directed movie until I saw it on television the other night. What I do remember is that it was a made for TV movie that aired in 2000, and I did see it then. Not knowing much about Little Richard's background other than his flamboyant stage act and his classic records, I thought that this was a great introduction to the life of a man whom, in my opinion, never really got the credit he deserved being a pioneer of rock 'n roll. Those honors always seem to go to other acts of the day (Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Pat Boone - please give us a break!), when the REAL pioneers of the genre are mostly ignored or have been reduced to being mere footnotes in rock 'n roll history. Those who are die-hard fans of Richard and his music might find this film to be lacking in many ways, but for those who are just getting familiar with this man's life and his music, this is a good place to begin their research.

Leon is an exceptional actor who seems to portray a lot of musical figures on film, and very well, I might add. Who can forget his dynamic (and probably most well known) performance as the former Temptation David Ruffin in the still popular "The Temptations" mini-series, or as J.T. Matthews in the early 1990's feature film "The Five Heartbeats"? (I've even seen him play Jackie Wilson in another movie mini-series, however, he had a small role in that film.) As Little Richard Penniman, Leon engrosses himself in his subject and although the film is not entirely factual, it piques your interest enough to make you want to seek out the real story of his life. I know, after seeing it yet again, I want to learn more!

My only complaint is that two hours (TV running time, anyway) was hardly enough time to capture the story of this man - this certainly deserved the mini-series treatment. It was like viewing Richard's career and personal life on fast forward - you didn't get the chance to learn whom his main influences were, or understand why he made some of the decisions he did because the film seemed rushed, especially during the last half hour. However, it is an enjoyable movie and definitely worth watching. It needs to be made available again - any fan of rock 'n roll musical bios will want to add this to their collection.

Little Richard Overview

The Richard Penniman (better known as Little Richard) depicted in this 2000 film was a flamboyant, larger-than-life character, not to mention a vital figure in pop music history--perhaps even "the architect of rock & roll," as he's called here. The fact that both of those portraits are accurate is a tribute to the makers of this TV movie, especially director Robert Townsend (Hollywood Shuffle) and Leon in the title role (Little Richard himself was an executive producer). Sure, it's a bit heavy on the melodrama, especially Richard's volatile relationship with his demanding father, and light on the music ("Tutti Frutti," "Lucille," and Richard's other hits are heard, with Leon lip-syncing to the original recordings, but there's no clue as to how Richard actually forged his style), but hey, that's TV for you. By and large, Little Richard is an entertaining ride, even without any DVD bonus material. --Sam Graham

The song contains a fast-paced beat intertwined with Jackson's lyrics about a woman named Annie, who has been attacked in her apartment by a "smooth" assailant. It was released as a single on October 24, 1988 and peaked at 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.[1] It was re-released on April 10, 2006 as a part of the Visionary: The Video Singles box-set. The re-released Visionary single charted at #19 in the UK. In 2003, the song appeared on the Number Ones greatest hits album. "Smooth Criminal" was presented in a ten-minute long clip in which Jackson dances through a 1930s-style nightclub (known in the film as "Club 30s"). The version of the song used in the clip is different from the album version: the background beats are different, there are several new lyrics (see below), and the song is much longer overall. The version of the video that is usually aired on network television is 4 minutes long and is merely a sped up version of the clip from the film. Jackson briefly moonwalks before the famous anti-gravity lean. The ten minute long "Smooth Criminal" clip is reminiscent of the musical number known as "The Girl Hunt Ballet" which is featured as the final number in the 1952 musical film The Band Wagon starring Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse.
